Mary Poppins here I come!

September 17, 2007 | Filed under: Uncategorized

Last Saturday I was exhibiting at the Hillfield-Strathallan College Homecoming. It was an outdoor setting with tents and tables provided. It was also a very windy day and I was able to do a Mary Poppins routine but on a grander scale. The wind picked up the tents and I tried to grab a pole but realized that there was no way that anything I could do would hold the tent down. The wind was fierce. I did let go but unfortunately for me, my bracelet got hooked on the pole and I was dragged along with the tent. It was very frightening as I couldn’t get loose, had visions of being dragged over tables and cars and losing my hand. The wind dropped suddenly and I was released with a gouge in my wrist, but no broken bones. My sister-in-law who was helping me is a nurse and quickly sat me down and applied pressure to the wound, cleaned it up and iced and bandaged it. I felt quite nauseated, never mind the pain. I was told that this was a reaction to shock. Now one tetanus shot and a prescription for anitibiotics later, I am doing quite well. Here I thought that jewellery design was a safe occupation-Hah!

The staff at the college were super and helped me get through this rather traumatic experience.

I thank them and of course my sister-in-law. If it hadn’t been for her I think that I would have had to go to a hospital.

I am gearing up now for the BEYOND THE VALLEY STUDIO TOUR which is during the week end after Thanksgiving–Oct. 13 and 14. The artisans are located in Dundas and beyond. Here is the link

http://www.beyondthevalley.ca/

There are 14 artisans taking part in the tour in 8 studios. Three of the studios are in century buildings which is certainly another attractive feature. Have a look at the website. I think that you will see that this is a worthwhile event with talented people displaying their crafts. This is one of the longest running studio tours in southern Ontario

Grimsby Festival of Art – Saturday Sept.8th

September 10, 2007 | Filed under: Uncategorized

Thank you every one who visited me at the Grimsby Festival of Art. I was located on Nelles Blvd. which was an absolutely beautiful place to be. The weather was exceptionally fine, the people were friendly and my sales were excellent. What more could I have asked for?

Nelles Blvd. has been the location of this art festival for a number of years. It has beautiful homes with fine landscaping and many mature trees. I would think that many of the homes date to the first half of the 20th century. The residents were most obliging allowing tents to be set up in front of their properties and driveways. The success of this festival is due in great measure to their interest and co-operation as well as the great number of volunteers who worked for many weeks prior and on the day of the event.

Many people mentioned that they thought there was a great improvement in the overall quality of the goods offered for sale. This is a juried show now so that would account for this improvement. There were many jewellers there with no two alike. This allowed for good choices for people–as the saying goes “there was something for everyone”. I like to create large bold pieces with unusual combinations of stones and I am happy to say that this was appreciated by many. Thank you to those that purchased my designs. It is most gratifying to know that my work is appreciated and considered exciting and beautiful. I am always inspired by these responses.

My friend Elaine worked with me on Saturday. We arrived at 6 a.m. for set up. Without her I would not have had such a successful day. Her help was invaluable and for that I am truly grateful.

My next event is at Hillfield-Strathallan College on Fennell Ave. in Hamilton for Homecoming.

This is then followed by the BEYOND THE VALLEY STUDIO TOUR in Dundas the weekend after Thanksgiving. I invite you to attend this worthwhile event featuring Artisans in Dundas.

I look forward to seeing you again!

Upcoming Events

September 5, 2007 | Filed under: Uncategorized

This Saturday (Sept. 8th) I will be exhibiting at the

Grimsby Festival of Art in Grimsby, Ontario.

My booth will be on Nelles Ave. I am excited and anxious about it all at the same time. I tend to be a worrier as my family will attest. I worry about the variety of my pieces, about the quality of gemstones and the construction, about the price point and it goes on and on. The one good thing from this is that I strive to produce better and more interesting pieces. The bad thing is that it can be one long whine.

This afternoon I am going to my suppliers to see if there are any unusual stones and to beef up my current supply of materials. Sometimes I think that this is the best part–the hunt! It reminds me of my career in antiques. The hunt was definitely the exciting part!

My son has almost finished my site and it is amazing! He is one talented young man. You will agree when you see it which should be fairly soon.
